Adult Education and Spiritual Formation

We never stop learning and growing as Christians.  It is a lifelong task.  We take that seriously at Christ Church, and provide opportunities for study of the Bible, theology, church history, Christian social ethics, prayer and spiritual practices.  We invite you to join us in the journey of spiritual formation.

Education for Ministry (EFM)

Are you interested in theological education in the comfort of a local church?  Education for Ministry (EfM) is a Christian formation course that involves scripture and theological study, as well as reflection on one's own life as ministry.  EFM is a four-year program of biblical and theological education for lay people in the church sponsored by the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee), one of the seminaries of the Episcopal Church.  The EfM group not only studies and discusses scripture and theology, but becomes a small spiritual community that shares worship and reflections on our thoughts and beliefs. One participant has called EfM "mini-seminary - with no papers and grades." Students can sign on for one year, or decide to take all four years of the program. This year, we have been graced with a joint EfM group with St. Paul's, North Andover. One of our members, Steve Taylor, will be graduating from the program and has also trained as a mentor. We need a minimum of six members to continue the group in the fall, and with an additional mentor, there is an opportunity for two groups if enough people sign on.

For more information about EFM you can go online, or e-mail Rosemarie Buxton or Steve Taylor.

Advent and Lenten Series
During the seasons of Advent and Lent, we offer series on a variety of topics.  During the past couple of years, we've offered a weekly Lenten movie series, showing films with a particular theme, with food and discussion afterwards. We've offer book series some years, as well as "Episcopal 101", a basic course on the Episcopal Church, designed for newcomers and old-timers alike. Watch for Advent and Lenten Series information in the various "Prophets".
Bible Study

Currently, the Tuesday Afternoon (2:00 p.m.) Bible Study group is on hiatus.  We are hoping to restart it soon.  Please contact the church office if interested.

Book Groups
We occasionally offer book group series, which are open to everyone who is interested in reading a particular book and discussing it.  In the past, we've read and discussed "An Altar in the World" by Barbara Brown Taylor, "Healing the Heart of Democracy" by Parker J. Palmer, "The Great Emergence" by Phyllis Tickle, and "The Rich and the Rest of Us" by Tavis Smiley and Cornel West. And perhaps the biggest book group we've had was the group that took the "Bible Challenge", reading and discussing the entire bible in a year! Watch for book group opportunities in the various "Prophets".
Prayer Group

Christ Church has a group of parishioners that faithfully gather twice a month, from September to June, to pray with one another.  These gatherings usually occur on a weekday evening in the Glebe House (the parish offices at 25 Central St.), and involve a time of sharing, a faith reflection, and a silent meditation followed by a reading of Compline (which is the Night Prayer service in the Episcopal Church’s Prayer Book).  Leadership of the gathering is shared by all the members of the group.  If you would be interested in learning more about this group, please contact Terry Kuhlmann. New members are welcome.
