Baptism preparation at Christ Church entails three preparatory sessions prior to the baptismal date. The first two sessions typically occur on the two Sundays prior to the scheduled baptism from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. The final session is usually scheduled for the Saturday before the baptism at a time convenient for all participants. Parents are required to attend all three sessions and godparents are strongly encouraged to attend the third session.
The first session involves an introduction of everyone in the group, some introductory remarks on baptism, followed by a discussion of three Scripture passages that are significant to the way that baptism is understood in the Episcopal Church. In the second session, we examine the baptismal service itself in the Book of Common Prayer, paying close attention to the promises made by both parents and godparents. We also talk about practical ways to cultivate a child’s spirituality in the home. The final session involves a discussion about the role of godparents and concludes with a rehearsal for the baptismal ceremony in the church.
Any questions regarding this preparation process should be directed to our Assistant Rector, the Reverend Kit Lonergan. To read more about baptism at Christ Church, click here.
